Is Shopping At A Bulk Food Store Cheaper?

Ready to save some plastic, the earth and some cash?
Is a bulk food store the place to do it all?

No doubt about it, buying in a bulk food store can be a daunting task.
Is carting in all your containers, scooping your own products and weighing your own jars worth it?

Well, we’ve done the research and we think it is…

better for the earth

  1. Reduce Landfill.
It can take over 600 years for a single plastic bag to disintegrate into microplastics. Glass jars may never decompose in landfill.

  2. Stop harming animals.
One small piece of plastic can create absolute devastation in our wildlife. Many fish and marine animals mistake plastic bags and other micro plastics for jellyfish.
If it takes 600 years for plastic to decompose into microplastics and 1 marine animal dies from ingestion each year of that one piece of plastic, that one piece has the potential to kill well over 600 marine animals.
You have the power to save marine animals by using a paper bag instead of plastic.

  3. Sustainable Landscapes.
More recycling = less land cleared for landfill (less rubbish) = more land for farming, housing and recreation.
The old saying “they're not making any more land” is so true. Unless you want your future generations to be building a house on top of an old landfill site, recycling is key.

  4. Save Energy.
Did you know that producing new aluminium from old products (including recycled cans and foil) uses 95% less energy than making it from scratch? For steel, it's about a 70% energy saving (source: Friends of the Earth.)

better for your wallet!

It’s time to save some CASH!

  1. Cheaper.
How much are you really paying for the packaging?
Here at Unpackaged we have customers comment DAILY on how much they’ve saved by buying their herbs and spices with us compared to a large supermarket.
A great example is Mixed Herbs, currently $1.99 for 100 grams, a re-used herb jar will cost you about 25 cents to fill VS $2.00 for a jar at the supermarket.

  2. Buy what you need.
Trying a new recipe and need 2 tbsp of something? Don’t buy a whole packet - literally purchase the 2 tbsp you need. Save on wastage!
This is also great for people that might need 1 kg of flour or sugar or pasta - buy as much, or as little as you need. Don’t end up with products that are sitting in your cupboard for years waiting to be used!

We’ve done a quick Unpackaged grocery shop VS a supermarket shop:
