Good Country Hemp - Supplier Spotlight

This month we are throwing the spotlight on our amazing local hemp supplier - Good Country Hemp.

Good Country Hemp was founded by husband and wife team Mick and Linda Andersen who both have a long farming heritage. When they decided to grow hemp on their farm near Mundulla, they soon discovered there was no one in South Australia to buy and process their harvested crop. So, they decided to build their own hemp seed processing facility and Good Country Hemp was born.

Good Production

The main passion driving early growth was to harness and develop the many benefits of hemp. Firstly, to take an ancient crop with remarkable advantages to farming such as soil improvement and carbon sequestration, and secondly, to bring the amazing health benefits of hemp foods for everyone to enjoy.

It turned out that the local Tatiara district of South Australia has superior conditions for growing hemp – a warm Mediterranean climate, good fertile soils, and excellent quality underground water for irrigating broad-acre hemp crops.

Today, Good Country Hemp partners with multiple local farmers contracted to grow specific hemp seed varieties for high-quality food products. After harvesting the seed it’s carefully dried, cleaned, and processed at Bordertown into the premium quality hemp foods they have become known for – cold-pressed hemp seed oil, hulled hemp seed, protein powder, and hemp flour.

Good Country Hemp currently has the largest hemp seed processing capability in South Australia and has complete traceability from the paddock to plate.

So, please enjoy the great health benefits that hemp gives. Good Country Hemp loves what they produce and they are passionate about good health for you and their farmland.

one of the world’s oldest crops

Hemp is one of the world’s oldest cultivated crops which is now seeing a huge resurgence in area plantings in Australia and overseas. The demand for nutrient-rich plant foods containing high protein like hemp continues to grow.

reducing greenhouse gasses

Hemp has a remarkable ability to use carbon from the atmosphere and put it back where it belongs – in the soil. Growing hemp gradually regenerates carbon-depleted soils by sequestering carbon and locking it into the soil for plants to use. After harvesting the seed, the large volume of biomass left in the paddock is ploughed in to boost soil carbon and benefit future crops.

using hemp seeds in cooking

Raw hulled hemp seeds taste great on their own, but roasted or baked hemp seeds can enhance the look and taste of bread, slices, biscuits, quiches, pancakes, protein balls, roasts, hamburgers, pasta, curries, stirfry and roasted and boiled veggies. Anywhere you would use nuts or other seeds try substituting with hemp seeds and get a flavour and health kick to go.

baking with hemp flour

Remember that hemp flour is gluten-free and because gluten gives a loaf of bread its texture and volume, without gluten a loaf of bread will be very dense and compact, like rye bread. So, try mixing hemp flour with other types of flour to give your loaf a lift (we suggest you start with a 50/50 blend and go from there). The good news is that biscuits, cakes, quiches and slices love hemp flour! Hemp flour is a great substitute for plain flour and will give your favourite recipes a great flavour and texture, with health benefits to go.
