Baked Beans

TIME: 2 hours, including cooking beans

Makes: 4 large portions

Baked beans on toast, baked beans as a side dish (perfect with sausages and mash!) or baked beans as a main mealโ€ฆhowever you like them, our recipe is economical, tasty and zero-waste!

 Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of dried white beans - navy beans are great

  • 2 cups vegetable stock (vege seasoning with water)

  • 1 cup water

  • 6 tbsp tomato sauce

  • 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 3 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper

  • 1 tsp salt

for thickening:

  • 8 tsp cornflour

  • 1/4 cup water

  1. Cook the beans as per our instructions here

  2. combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan (except the beans), add beans.

  3. bring to a simmer for about 20 minutes. stir occasionally so the beans donโ€™t stick to the saucepan bottom.

  4. mix thickening ingredients in a bowl.

  5. pour thickening ingredients into the saucepan and stir to combine. the sauce will thicken quickly - about 2 minutes.

  6. serve with toasted crunchy bread and season as needed.
