DIY that helps the planet
Going green at home doesn’t need to be difficult.
Upcycling, Reusing, and Recycling are all key concepts in our tips for DIY fun that also helps the planet.
Recycled planters.
Don’t throw away your old coffee tins or jars, use them as a pot for plants. Grab yourself some potting mix or soil and herb seedlings to create your own indoor herb garden.
Growing your own herbs like this has 2 benefits:
1. Reusing and recycling your old jars and tins.
2, Growing your own herbs means you don’t need to buy any - no more packaged herbs. Think of the packaging (and $$) you’ll save.
Gift wrap
Save yourself some $$ and don’t buy any more gift wrap EVER AGAIN!
A 2017 survey from CARE Australia found Australians use 150,000 kilometres of wrapping paper over the festive season – enough to wrap the world in paper almost four times.
There are so many great gift wrap alternatives that are fun and ecofriendly:
Recycle gift bags.
Don’t put them in the recycling after receiving a gift, save gift bags to be re-used.
Use a cloth, a beach towel or a tea towel
Give a gift in a gift!
A tea towel is a great way to gift a smaller item and it’s totally useful too.
Sarongs and table cloths are also great ideas.Make a gift sack.
Gift sacks aren’t just for Christmas. Spend some time creating gift sacks for your friends and family, or have some made. Simply reuse year after year.
Kids LOVE getting involved with decorating gifts sacks and choosing fabrics.Old maps, kids artwork, magazine pages, newspapers.
Dress up a newspaper wrapped gift with some recycled ribbon or twine.
My kids love getting newspaper-wrapped gifts from their uncle, they always know which gifts are from him.
Lunch Wraps
Ditch the single-use plastic sandwich wrap and make your own beeswax wraps.
These wraps are reusable, eco-friendly and you can create them in any patterned fabric you like.
Did you know that plastic sandwich wrap takes over 600 years to break down? Even then it only turns into microplastics, it never truly disappears.
A beeswax wap can be made from 100% cotton fabric that can be used over and over - then finally be composted or put into your green waste bin.
